Choosing a domain name is the most exciting part of the process of building an online business. It's the name you dream to read about it in the Time magazine, inc, get interviewed in your local tv or maybe the cnn.
However if you think a little you will notice that most successful site their names are not that genius, take a look at amazon, yahoo, ebay...why not nile, wahoo or egate etc..also the next successful era google why google why not boogle ...then came asmallworld 43things etc..all the names do not value with the site behind it, if the site wasn't good no one would have heard of these names.
Although all this sounds very reasonable, it is still my favourite part.
Things to put in mind when choosing domain names:
1- Avoid dashes, only in specific indications where you need to separate words or numbers eg i-bloggers, and the i stands for independent, but you should own both the one with dash and without.
2- Think of numbers before or after the desired name if you cannot find the original one, example 43things, thenext7, 123greetings etc..
3- The name does not make the site
4- Good names are catchy and easy to remember
5- Ask people around you, preferable young people ie teen agers
6- Think of adding the, a etc
7- Think of phrases a very good example of this is rememberthemilk.com (a successful online to do lists)
8- Take it whenever you find it available as you might feel sorry the next day when you find someone else has grabbed while using his laptop on a boat in the middle of the ocean, remember you are competing with the world.
9- Do not listen to domains site, you do not need to own all the extensions like .net or .org unless you aim to provide many services, example .com for ecommerce and the .org stands for the charity arm of your company but this is too early to think of.
10- Last but not least if you starting any business better go for the .com, unless maybe you want to look a little bit professional for a specific reason go for .org, when you aim to start a network of anything buy both .net and .com.
11- Buy all your domains from one provider, to make it easier later when renewing and managing DNS etc..
